Butterscotch Album: Life With the Birds (2023-2025) I am currently working on a collection of folk songs from 2023–2025. The idea is to release the songs in order, starting with this short instrumental. When we were kids, we used to send tapes as letters, and I always liked to start each side with an interesting instrumental I’d found. "Butterscotch" was inspired by a beautiful phrase in a Joni Mitchell song where she describes the sun coming in a window like butterscotch. It’s an instrumental about the light coming in—how it warms you and makes everything seem friendlier and sweeter, especially after a long darkness. In this process, I will be tempted to overthink things to the point where they don’t get done. To combat that, I have made a deal with myself: this recording and the ones that follow are allowed to be imperfect, as long as they don’t contain obvious musical flubs. The goal is to capture the essence of the ideas so they can be, at least, understood—and with any luck, appreciated.
