Released 2023
I am currently working on a collection of folk songs from 2023–2025. The idea is to release the songs in order, starting with a short instrumental. When we were kids, we used to send tapes as letters, and I always liked to start each side with an interesting instrumental I’d found.
In this process, I will be tempted to overthink things to the point where they don’t get done. To combat that, I have made a deal with myself: this recording and the ones that follow are allowed to be imperfect, as long as they don’t contain obvious musical flubs. The goal is to capture the essence of the ideas so they can be, at least, understood—and with any luck, appreciated.
No, I don’t want to sound too dramatic
And I mind my own business as a rule.
Sometime I don’t have much money.
Sometimes I act like a fool.
I know the preacher wants to see me on Sunday.
So I’ve been blocking all his calls.
Besides I’ve got me a thrift store Buddha.
and he don't say anything at all
Some folks go through unhappy
Some folks try to make things worse.
I'll be satisfied at the end of the line.
Cause I didn't have a reason to be first
I don’t struggle with questions of existence.
I go out drinking and dancing when I’m blue.
And I’ve got a thrift store Buddha
that keeps me thinking of you.
[BREAK]
It was a sunny Saturday morning
I hadn’t sat out to make a new friend.
I said how much for this thrift store Buddha
And the lady there said that depends…
He’s got weird ears. He’s kinda heavy.
On the bottom, you'll find a little crack.
and someone has chipped his elbow.
and then she frowned, staring intently at his back.
And I guess somebody forgot to price him.
And if you think two dollars is OK
I will wrap up your thrift store, Buddha.
And you can take the little guy home today.
(and then she said)
If you can reach a point of satisfaction,
Won't you come back and tell me what you did
and because of her surprising reaction
I don’t think I’ll ever get rid.
Of my little thrift store Buddha
I think I’ll get one for my car
that I’ll never be stuck in traffic.
You’re never waiting when , you’re happy where you are
[E] Someday you don't [A] come to mind
[E] but on the days you do
for all the good it does me
I makes my heart feel blue
You don't write, I don't call
I can't help if your sad
You say I put you through hell
But i gave it what I had
(breath)
[E7] [bump,bump,bump]
[E7] [bump,bump,bump]
of all the things that drives me
and push me from behind
Things I'm supposed to do
and build, repair or find
Some wrongs cannot righted
You can't make them ok
Leave it for tomorrow
Procrastinate today
(breath)
[E7] [bump,bump,bump]
[E7] [bump,bump,bump]
[CHORUS]
[A] Maybe everything's alright
[E] then, maybe its not
[A] If you could only let it go
[E] before it's forgot
[A] I lay my cards after the deal
[E] and if you let me play them all
[A] all your troubles seem so real
till you [B7 ] drop em where they fall
and I don't need another hole
in the bucket as I walk
I'll bet all my good intentions
over all your idle talk
I hear the clock is ticking
but I like to watch the hands
drift around the circle
while your making all your plans
(breath)
[E7] [bump,bump,bump]
[E7] [bump,bump,bump]
[CHORUS]

[AMAJ7] I hear you ain't been sleeping well.
[D6add9] It’s been a year since you went through hell
[D] But tomorrow is coming around
[Asus] again.
Have some patience, take some time
Till you're back to feeling fine.
Into this life, some rain is gonna fall
[E] And I guess what I am trying to say.
[D] Is today a better day
I'm not gonna ask you why
I’m just glad there’s you and I.
Though it's too soon to stop the tears
Darkness, sunlight, nighttime, spring.
Time passes through everything.
Around each corner comes a new surprise.
[E] The season is no holiday,
[D] But I think you're going to be OK
[E] and I guess what I am trying to say
[D] ...is today is a better day
Give your heart to love and care.
You’ll notice friendship everywhere.
Close your eyes and feel some peace of mind
Clouds are parting rain has stopped.
And then, ready or not
I’ll be here to treat you RIGHT.
This season is no holiday
But there's sunlight, braking through the gray
(get) into my arms without delay.
Today is a better day

[C] one day I woke up
and the folks that i [G] admired
[C] couldn't say a kind word
and never seemed inspired
[F] anyone can have a [G] bad day
[F] you can't always be your [G] best
but if i'm getting that way
You can say, "give it a rest" and then...
[C] Stick me on an ice flow
before i get mean and [G] grumpy
[C] and I'm all paranoid
sensitive and [G] jumpy
I don't really feel like
this old man that i've become
I try hard to be pleasant
and be good to everyone
so before my hinges start groaning
and my memory's a mess
and I'm bitching and moaning
and I forget hom=w I am blessed
Stick me on an ice flow
before i get mean and grumpy
and I get all paranoid
sensitive and jumpy
Maybe when my friends all gather
to say that last goodby
and they lay me in the heather
with tear drops in their eyes
the me that they'll remember
was nice to them sometimes
and tried to be there for them
before i became unkind
because they...
Stuck me on an ice flow
before i got mean and grumpy
and got all paranoid
sensitive and jumpy
The K&P Song Album: Life With the Birds (2023–2025)
This song is a love letter to the friendship and camaraderie I have enjoyed since I started hanging out with the crowd at the "Kick and Push Open Mic Night" on Friday nights in Sharbot Lake.
I moved to the Arden area in August of 2024. After psyching myself up for almost a month, I wandered into the Kick and Push Open Mic Night empty-handed, just to take the temperature of the scene. Almost immediately, I discovered that one of the local artists I admire the most, Donna Larocque, was living a double life: she was also a beautiful singer and a solid guitar player!
Once Donna saw me, she immediately introduced me to everyone with a strong pulse. That night I was gently coerced into playing, and I have been going back, almost without exception, every Friday night since.
Sharbot Lake is a hotbed of remarkable talent and hospitable hearts. This song labours to capture my gratitude and love for the community and the fun we stumble into every week. There are triumphs and there are disasters, but there is always support and acceptance. Musically, it can sometimes feel like the inside of a "washing machine," but more often than not, it’s fantastic. It’s always fun—good music, good friends, and just the right kind of crazy.
